Al Gore’s Internet Issues

Al Gore, former United States vice president, discussed key issues regarding the Internet last November 2008 at Web 2.0. He particularly pointed out to five things that contributed to the evolution of the Internet and the integral role it plays in everyday communication.

According to Gore, the Internet has allowed people to create websites, blogs, and other similar means of communicating their ideas. It has made reaching out to communities easier. Email alerts, said Gore, are also important.

Gore also presented an analogy that concerned the development of the Internet and the challenge to supply it with more useful applications.

The 3rd thing that Gore pointed out is the Internet’s purpose of generating a higher level of consciousness among human beings in terms of their relationship with the environment. The founder of CurrentTV also made mention of the possible “democratizing” of television because of the Internet.

Finally, Gore stated his belief that the country can ultimately reduce foreign oil dependence and stop global warming through the Internet by continuously drumming up related issues in various websites. Gore believes that doing so will help people respond collectively and come up with viable solutions.

American environmentalist Al Gore was born Albert Arnold Gore, Jr. on March 31, 1948. Aside from his environmental campaigns, Gore is also a busy author, businessperson, and Nobel laureate. He is also known as the country’s 45th vice president who served from 1993 to 2001 under the Clinton administration. His 2006 environmental documentary, An Inconvenient Truth, won an Academy Award in 2007.

Gore spent his childhood in Washington, D.C. and Carthage, Tennessee. He went to Harvard University in 1965 and received a degree in government with honors in 1969. After returning from Vietnam where he served in the war, Gore worked as an investigative reporter for the Tennessean in Nashville. He also went on to study at Vanderbilt University’s Divinity School and eventually went to Law School.

Al Gore is a member of Apple Computer, Inc.’s board of directors and is senior advisor to Google, Inc. He is also a visiting professor at Middle Tennessee State University. In 2005, Gore received the Nobel Peace Prize together with the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.
