A Posthumous Oscar for Heath Ledger

Thursday, March 26th, 2009

On January 22, 2008, Hollywood and the rest of the world was shocked and saddened by the death of Heath Ledger. The 28-year old actor, who was found in his New York apartment, died of prescription medication overdose several months before the movie “The Dark Knight” opened to audiences worldwide.

Last Sunday, February 22, 2009, Heath Ledger’s performance as Joker in the movie was honored with an Oscar statuette for the best supporting actor category. On hand to accept only the second posthumous Oscar were the actor’s family: Kim Ledger (father), Sally Bell (mother), and the late actor’s sister Kate Ledger. Amidst a standing ovation and solemn silence, the family accepted the award on behalf of Matilda, Heath Ledger’s daughter with actress Michelle Williams. The Oscar statuette will be handed over to Matilda when she turns 18 years old.

After the movie was shown last 2008, movie critics unanimously agreed that Heath Ledger’s interpretation of the villain was both chilling and shocking. Many praised his performance as being original. The late actor’s Joker was ugly and monster-like as compared to earlier interpretations like the one by Jack Nicholson in the Tim Burton helmed “Batman” in 1989.

During the filming of “The Dark Knight,” Heath Ledger admitted that he was suffering from bouts of insomnia. He took prescription medications to help him counter the problem.

Prior to reaping praises in “The Dark Knight”, Heath Ledger received an Oscar best actor nomination for his performance as Ennis Del Mar in Director Ang Lee’s “Brokeback Mountain” way back 2001.

Heath Ledger’s other film credits include “10 Things I Hate About You” (1999), “The Patriot” in 2000, and “Monster’s Ball” and “A Knight’s Tale which both came out in 2001.

Business Golf Etiquette

Thursday, March 26th, 2009

Golf is a spectator sport that is played in almost every part of the world. Tournaments are held in different courses, each uniquely designed and covering either nine or 18 holes. It is the perfect venue for those who want to create and strengthen business relationships because of its relaxed atmosphere.

According to a COMPAS Leader Poll conducted in 2002, most of today’s business leaders use golf as a toll in doing business. Aside from being a relaxing activity, it is also a remunerative one since for every dollar spent on the golf outing, businesses and business leaders stand to earn as much as $1,500 or more. Some business leaders even organize charity tournaments that can serve as common venues for creating better rapport with business affiliates or possible clients.

Because of this, many new golf courses have opened with reduced membership costs.

Golf offers a glimpse of a person’s personality, conduct, and values – all of which are important factors in business dealings. So in order to make sure that proper results are achieved for every business golf outing, the following pointers should be remembered:

• One must be prepared.
• Get organized and find time to practice by arriving early at the venue.
• Plan ahead and set realistic goals or outcomes.
• Be completely knowledgeable about the company. Paint a positive picture of the company.
• Knowledge about the game is also important. It is advisable to take a crash course in golf if one is not familiar about the sport.
• Make sure that the venue is the best option for the client or business affiliate. It is important to take note of the golf course’s proximity.

A business golf outing will send the right signals and produce positive results if business leaders practice proper golf etiquette. Some of the things to keep in mind include dressing appropriately, refraining from cheating, and avoiding instances of bragging or complaining about anything.

Bacardi Makes Its Move in Indian Rum Market

Tuesday, February 24th, 2009

According to a recent article in The Economic Times, India, Bacardi is aggressively securing exclusive rights to marketing their world-famous high-quality spirits to some of India’s hottest nightspots, including the Hard Rock Café in Mumbai.
The distillery giant is promoting its popular brands Grey Goose, 42 Below and Eristoff vodkas, along with its flagship Bacardi rums, in an effort to outmaneuver its competitors.

Bacardi’s range of drinks cover a wide range of price points in the premium to luxury vodka markets. For example, Bacardi is pitting Grey Goose against Belvedere and Ciroc. 42 Below is going up against Absolut in the super-premium segment, while Eristoff is intended to take on Smirnoff.

A Bacardi official said the company commented, “There is nothing innovative about it. That is the way market is evolving, and we would like to have a big say in this category.”

An unnamed industry rival said Bacardi’s moves were a cause for concern for two reasons: “It’s the first that white spirits segment pulling off exclusivity with the trade. Bacardi’s efforts reflect the rising clout of white spirits in a market where they used to ride on the back of whiskies. This also reflects Bacardi’s strategy to focus on market leadership in India’s potentially huge white spirits market given the country’s demography skewed towards the youth.”

The Bacardi Family of products has its work cut out for it, as they are not the only game in town. Pernod is now eyeing Bacardi’s market share in India by aggressively marketing Havana Club. Havana Club has hit the Chandigarh, Goa and Haryana markets. The move is expected to shake up India’s premium white rum market. Who will come out on top of this rum war? That will be up to India’s rum lovers. Stay tuned!

Tiger Woods’ Golf Course Design Business

Friday, January 2nd, 2009

In June 2008, Tiger Woods won the U.S. Open against Rocco Mediate. It was his 14th career win in a major championship. After his victory, Woods was forced to go “on leave” as he underwent surgery for a torn ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) in his left knee.

Ever since he became “sidelined”, Woods has been busy concentrating on other important matters, like designing a golf course.

In the early part of November 2008, Woods visited the Blue Ridge Mountains of the Cliffs at High Carolina, one of the golf course communities developed by Jim Anthony. He was there to check out the course he is busy designing these days.

Woods explained that his golf course will be able to help players hit a variety of shots and there will be multiple tees so that golfers will be “encouraged to walk the course”.

The world renowned golfer has stayed active courtesy of his design business which currently has three projects: one in Dubai, another in Mexico, and of course, the one in North Carolina. He reiterates though that he still has no plans of designing more courses even if he is not yet sure when he can go back to playing golf.

Woods also revealed how pleased he was with the victory of the country’s first ever African-American president, Barack Obama. (http://www.usatoday.com/sports/golf/2008-11-09-tigerwoods-thecliffs_N.htm)

Born on December 30, 1975, Woods started playing golf at two years old and by the age of 15, while studying at Western High School in Anaheim, he became the youngest ever U.S. Junior Amateur Champion. By August 1996, Woods was already a professional player at the young age of 21.

Woods, who was born Eldrick Tont Woods, considers himself “Cablinasian” since he is Caucasian, Black, (American) Indian, and Asian. His father, the late Earl Woods (1932-2006) was 50% American, 25% Chinese, and 25% Native American. Woods’ mother, Tilda, is from Thailand and of Thai, Chinese, and Dutch ancestry.

Tiger Woods is currently the world’s number one golfer and 2007’s highest paid professional athlete. He has multiple endorsement deals worth millions including those with Nike, Inc. and Titliest. He also actively participates in charity and youth projects via organizations like The Tiger Woods Foundation and the Tiger Woods Learning Center.
