Pro-Basketball Player Sentenced to 18 Months in Jail

Friday, March 12th, 2010

Retired basketball player and former NBA star Jayson Williams has pleaded guilty in front of Court and took full responsibility for the accident that claimed the life of his limousine driver in 2002. Williams was charged with assault and agreed to serve at least 18 months in prison.

He was first charged with reckless manslaughter, an offense that would have landed him 10 years in jail, for which he pleaded not guilty. He pleaded guilty to the less severe assault count for the death of Costas Christofi.

With his personal life already rocky, Jayson Williams stated that it was his recklessness that killed his driver. He said that he did not look in the direction where the muzzle of the gun was pointed and this led him to accidentally claim the life of his driver. He has taken full responsibility for the tragedy.

Calm and collected during the entire procedure, Williams was also charged with drunken driving last week after running his SUV into a tree in New York. Several stitches oculd be seen in his right eye while he listened to all the charges against him.

The assault case carries a minimum of 18 months in federal prison because a gun was involved while the reckless manslaughter Williams was initially charged with could have given landed him in a federal prison for 10 years. Williams posted bail after he was charged with the assault.

Williams recounted that what happened almost eight years ago was a tragic accident. He was giving some of his friends a tour of his New Jersey home on February 14, 2002 and when they reached his bedroom, he started showing them his gun collection. He then admitted that he failed to check one barrel of a double-barreled 12-gauge shotgun that went off and eventually killed his driver. Williams maintained that what happened was purely an accident and that panic got to him after the incident. Years of legal proceedings followed until charges were finally placed last January 11, 2010.

Williams had a career spanning nine years in the NBA playing for the Philadelphia 76ers and the New Jersey Nets. He was forced to retire in 2000 due to injuries and has since then taken a downward spin in his personal life.

Shoppers Scramble for Zhu Zhu Pets

Friday, January 15th, 2010

Parents across the US are dashing to buy the mechanical rodent known as the Zhu Zhu, currently the most in-demand Christmas gift for children.

They could be hard to come by though.

Retailers like Toys “R” Us and Walmart have been losing stock of the toys as parents continue to make requests for them. Meanwhile, opportunists at eBay have been selling them for as much as $100 each; the elusive toys otherwise only retail for $8.

In research conducted by the NPD Group, Zhu Zhus now rank among the five fastest-selling toys of 2009, in league with old favorites like G.I. Joe. In this view, Zhu Zhu’s maker, Cepia, could pocket $70 million in profits.

Loosely translated in Chinese as “piglet,” the Zhu Zhu is essentially a squeaking and chirping piece of artificial intelligence covered in faux fur. It is engineered to respond randomly to a touch and can scoot around reflexively.

But the fun doesn’t stop there. Largely made for 4-year old tots, the Zhu Zhu comes with a wide array of accessories, for which parents stand to shell out as much as $50. A single slide costs around $35, while a skateboard retails for nearly $13, the full-fledged “hamster city” selling for $130.

With daughters Natalie and Ashley, Cepia founder Russell Hornsby started conceiving the Zhu Zhu in 2008. At that time, the trio just discovered a 45-million strong demographic for live hamsters; they were willing to gamble on such market to splurge on artificial pets.

Such sales pitches grew to a crescendo this Yuletide, spawning a hysteria unseen since the debuts of Tickle Me Elmo, Pokemon, and Cabbage Patch dolls.

So-called Zhu Zhu parties have even been held. Throughout 2009, there were 300 of these affairs, in which parents could bond over their children, who would in turn bond over Zhu Zhus.

Now Wal-Mart has ordered more of the toys, to be shipped via 747s from China. In addition, the store has started holding Zhu Zhu sales twice a week, just so parents could satiate their children in time for Christmas morning.

YouTube Lists Most Viewed Videos

Friday, January 8th, 2010

For the first time ever, YouTube counted down its most watched videos for the year.

In the list published Dec. 16, singing phenomenon Susan Boyle tellingly got the most popular video of 2009. Approximately 120 million views worldwide went to a clip of her debut appearance on Britain’s Got Talent, the reality contest where she emerged as runner-up.

She bested the second-most watched video by a huge margin. “David after Dentist,” a clip of a seven-year-old boy dazed and disoriented after a dentist’s appointment, was viewed 37 million times the world over.

Up next, with 33 million views, was the “JK Wedding Entrance Dance.” Minnesotan newlyweds Jill Peterson and Kevin Heinz star in the clip, which features their July wedding’s unconventional intro. To the tune of Chris Brown’s “Forever,” the couple and their entourage walked and danced their way down the aisle.

“Forever” re-entered the music charts shortly after the video went viral. Sony, which owns the song’s rights, shared in ad revenues from the clip.

Meanwhile, “David” of dental fame has become a precocious public speaker of sorts. Even more successful was Boyle, whose debut CD has topped the US album charts for multiple weeks in December.

Coming in fourth was the trailer for the blockbuster film New Moon. At 31 million views, it gave a titillating sneak peek into the film, which chronicles the travails of a teenager caught in the romantic advances of a vampire and a werewolf. The movie was starred in by heartthrobs Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner, along with Kristen Stewart.

Another commercial rounded out the top five. Bottled water maker Evian garnered 27 million views for its ad showing diaper-clad infants on rollerblades.

On top of the most watched videos, YouTube listed the year’s most popular music videos produced by record labels. At 82 million views, “I Know You Want Me” by Pitbull claimed the top spot. Teen pinup Miley Cyrus acquired 118 million views collectively for “The Climb” and “Party in the USA.”

YouTube, which debuted in 2005, is currently one of the world’s most famous websites. Every minute, 20 hours of new material are uploaded into the site.

Celebrity Tattoos

Wednesday, December 16th, 2009

Somehow celebrity tattoos are the whole reason why body art has become so popular and universally accepted these days. Body art was somehow taboo for some few decades back — it was viewed as proof of an eccentric past and an indication of being an ex-convict.

Tattoos on women was something else, but celebrity tattoos changed all that. When Hollywood celebrities radically started getting and publicly displaying tattoos, it instantly became a fashion statement.

Seventh century explorers brought the idea of tattooing to Europe. However, at that time, it was very difficult to get and was only meant for the upper class since it was very expensive. Later, when it became more accessible to the general public, the value became less. And then celebrities made it popular. Since celebrities are some sort of royalty for most people, they become role models in one way or another. When they began taking tattoo seriously, they gave the public access to explore the ancient art of tattooing. This then resulted to a more improved design —customized classic and classy style.

British singer Robbie Williams is undoubtedly the king of celebrity tattoos. Depending on how you count, he has about 14 tattoos. The queen of celebrity tattoos is certainly Angelina Jolie, who has a serious love for the said art. She has a dozen tattoos at last count. Her personalized tattoos are focused more on text with various ethnic backgrounds.

Melanie C, Spice Girls member, comes next in line. She has about 10 tattoos on her body, mostly inspired by eastern origin, though there have been rumors that she is regretting getting tattooed.

Other tattoo-toting popular celebrities include Justin Timberlake, Christina Aguilera, Johnny Depp, George Clooney, and Britney Spears.

Celebrity tattoos have been a big contributing factor to restoring the richness of ancient art, thus making it desirable and acceptable for the rest of us

Former Child Stars and their Success Stories

Wednesday, August 26th, 2009

Before video games, computers, cell phones and other gadgets, almost everybody was hooked on VHS, the cinemas and or the television. So viewers get curious about the child actors of the yesteryears. A couple of Hollywood’s former child stars have succeeded outside the limelight of show business:

Melissa Gilbert, 45 – best known for her portrayal of Laura Elizabeth Ingalls Wilder in the T.V. series “Little House on the Prairie” from 1974 to 1982. In 1985, Gilbert is the youngest person to be honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for participation in the television business.

In 1978, Gilbert ventured into productions after her personal manager formed Half-pint Productions. Gilbert came up with The Miracle Worker in 1979 in which she starred as Helen Keller opposite Patty Duke. The film won an Emmy for the movie of the week. In 1987, she did a bright stage performance and won an Outer Critics Circle Award for Best Debuting Actress. She also landed lead roles in The Glass Menagerie, The Miracle Worker, Bus Stop, and Love Letters at the Los Angeles’ Canon Theater.

Gilbert made more shows in the 90’s and in 1996, expanded her talents to directing. In the turn of the century, Gilbert continued on playing lead roles.

Fred Savage, 32 – best remembered for his role on “Wonder Years” as Kevin Arnold. Fred began his acting career at nine for small television roles. His big break, however, came in 1987 when he got the role as the cheeky grandson of Peter Falk in the comical movie “The Princess Bride.” Fred graduated from Brentwood High in LA in 1994 and earned his Bachelor’s degree in Communications and English at Stanford University.

Fred had many guest appearances and supporting roles on television shows and films. In recent years, Savage has evolved from actor to director. He directed several episodes of “Even Stevens” and “That so Raven” for the Disney Channel.

Trends Analysis: Talk Radio

Monday, May 11th, 2009

Talk radio shows in the United States have always been an interesting object of study. In its simplest definition, talk radio is a format that is centered around discussions on topical issues. Most talk radio shows feature a single host interviewing several guests on the shows. More often than not, the “talk” in talk radio is also supplanted by the numerous calls coming in from listeners either in the form of a question or a voiced opinion on the issue being talked about. In between segments, talk radio jocks often play music or advertisements, depending on the thrust of the station. Topics range from serious topics such as politics and current events, all the way to lighter subjects such as showbiz and sports.

There is a common misconception that talk radio is limited to the AM radio frequency band, due to the notion that AM broadcasts are generally centered on public information while FM broadcasts focus on entertainment. However, the talk radio format is also common in FM stations, although the range of topics can be very different. For one, talk radio shows on commercial stations (mostly found on the FM band) focus on using conversation and discussion for entertainment purposes. Other topics that US talk shows discuss are astrology, health, finance, and romantic advice.

Talk shows on the radio in the United States have undergone major paradigm shifts over the decades. The format reached the peak of its popularity in the United States in the 1990s. This was sparked by the repeal of the FCC’s (Federal Communications Commission) “fairness doctrine” that happened in 1987. This doctrine states that the stations must provide free airtime for (often controversial and off-color) opinions and responses to topics that were being broadcast. The revoking of this mandate now allowed broadcasters to engage in programming that leaned towards being partisan. Moreover, this event helped talk radio’s popularity because radio jocks such as Howard Stern could now utilize their “shock jock” routines for entertainment.

In terms of the listening populace, researchers found that 17% of the public listen to talk radio shows regularly, and it was discovered that most of this group are conservative, middle-aged males. Political leanings were also reflected in the studies on talk radio: among its listeners, 41% are Republicans while 28% are Democrats; 45% believed that they were conservatives, while 18% said they were liberal.

The top five U.S. talk radio shows are hosted by: Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Dr. Laura Schlessinger, Howard Stern, and Michael Savage. Limbaugh calls himself “America’s Truth Detector” and “The Doctor of Democracy.” Limbaugh, Hannity and Savage are conservative political commentators. Dr. Laura Schlessinger is a conservative who often discusses pre-marital cohabitation, permissive parenting, and other practices in modern American culture that she considers immoral. Howard Stern is known for his non-political topics and his provocative, often offensive sense of humor.

New technologies such as the internet have also made the broadcasting of talk shows cost effective and wide-reaching. Podcasting technologies even allow amateur jocks to publish and “webcast” their shows online and make them available for download for those who missed the time slot. The global accessibility of these broadcasts has also widened the audience of talk show broadcasters in the United States.

Generally speaking, the popularity of radio in general has waned over the years, particularly because of newer media, but the format of the radio talk show continues to successfully integrate itself into the new media culture.

Danny Boyle’s Slumdog Millionaire Wins Oscar Best Picture

Thursday, March 26th, 2009

Director Danny Boyle’s hard work has paid off. “Slumdog Millionaire”, the British-produced movie that he helmed, won Best Picture in the 2009 Oscar Awards held on February 22, 2009.

“Slumdog Millionaire” follows the story of a Mumbai orphan who goes on a winning streak on India’s version of the popular game show “Who Wants to be a Millionaire?” Incorporated into this is the love story of Jamal (the orphan played by Dev Patel) and Latika (Freida Pinto) who are separated from each other because of Jamal’s brother Salim. The story is told not only with artistic ambition and symbolism, but also with commercial appeal.

The film begins with the local police interrogating Jamal about the allegations that he was cheating in order to correctly answer the questions in the game show. Jamal responds by telling the police how his life’s stories helped him figure out the answer to each question. The film’s simple storytelling successfully intertwines Jamal’s quest for survival with all the questions asked in the popular game show.

Filled with subtitles and shot in India with an Indian cast and crew, “Slumdog Millionaire” is Fox Searchlight’s first Academy Award winner. It also serves as a clear indication that the production company is firm in its advocacy of promoting daring works that do not embrace the common studio system.

Aside from the Best Picture Award, the film also won Oscar statuettes for adapted screenplay, editing, cinematography, original song, sound mixing, original score, and the Best Director Oscar for Director Danny Boyle.

“Slumdog Millionaire” not only grabbed top honors in the prestigious awards ceremony, the movie has also become a box office hit worldwide. Despite lacking star power, the film’s domestic gross has reached over $100 million.
